Chihuahua clothesHats and sweaters made to fit a Chihuahua
Chihuahuas feel the cold quickly: a tiny body, little fat and often a short coat. Caperro knits hats and sweaters to Chihuahua sizes — most wear an XXS hat and an S or M sweater — by hand, after you order.

Why Chihuahuas get cold so fast
Small dogs lose body heat faster than big ones. A Chihuahua has a lot of skin for very little body, almost no fat to hold warmth, and — in smooth-coated dogs — a thin coat. Vets list the breed among the dogs that feel the cold quickly and benefit from a coat outdoors.
The ears matter too. They are large and thin, stand up into the wind, and stay bare under any sweater.
Signs your Chihuahua is cold: shivering, curling up tight, slowing down, lifting a paw, or refusing to walk on. Warm them up and head home. Read how cold is too cold for a Chihuahua for temperatures and walk times.
Chihuahua sizes at a glance
| Your Chihuahua | Hat | Sweater |
|---|---|---|
| Puppy or very small adult | XXXS (15–18 cm head) | XXS (0.5–1 kg) |
| Most adults | XXS (18–20 cm head) | S (1.5–2.2 kg) |
| Larger adult | XS (20–23 cm head) | M (2.2–3.8 kg) |
Standard pet-shop sizes often start too big for a Chihuahua — gaps at the neck, rubbing behind the legs, ears squashed flat. Why that happens and how we avoid it. A guide, not a rule: Chihuahuas range from under 1.5 to over 3 kg. Measure the head for a hat and weigh your dog for a sweater; the size guide shows how. Between sizes, choose the smaller hood or the larger beanie.
Which piece for which walk
- Dry and chilly: the Cable Sweater alone.
- Cold and windy: sweater plus the Pom-Pom Beanie, which also wraps the neck.
- Freezing, snow or strong wind: sweater plus the Pom-Pom Hood, which covers both ears completely — and a shorter walk.
The hood and the sweater come in the same 13 colours and the beanie in 10 of them, so a hat and sweater can match. Two items get 25% off.
The same sizes fit other small breeds: Yorkshire Terrier, Pomeranian, Maltese, Shih Tzu, Miniature Dachshund, Toy Poodle, Papillon, Havanese and more.
Questions
Why do Chihuahuas shiver so much?
Cold is one reason: a small body with little fat and often a short coat loses heat quickly. But Chihuahuas also shake from excitement, nerves or fear, and sometimes because of pain or illness. If your dog shivers in a warm room, or the shaking comes with other changes, ask your vet.
What size clothes does a Chihuahua wear?
For hats most Chihuahuas wear XXS (18–20 cm head); small or young ones XXXS. For sweaters, sized by weight, an adult Chihuahua of 1.5–2.2 kg wears S and one of 2.2–3.8 kg wears M. Always measure: the breed varies a lot.
Is it cruel to dress a Chihuahua?
Not when the clothing has a purpose and fits. A sweater or hat on a cold walk keeps a tiny dog comfortable. Take it off indoors, never leave your dog alone in it, and stop if your dog keeps scratching or rubbing at it.
Do Chihuahuas need a hat or only a sweater?
A sweater covers the body; the large, thin ears stay bare. On windy, snowy or freezing walks a hat that covers the ears — like the Pom-Pom Hood — adds the protection a sweater can't.
